Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Wednesday, said that Mr. Sam Rainsy's call for the Cambodian Armed Forces to disobey the government was a true act of treason inciting war in the country. To the premier, the opposition party CNRP deserved to be dissolved to prevent war from happening in Cambodia.
"The measures we took so far were to avoid war, because all of them [CNRP politicians] are the kind of people who incite war. Now, we have more and more evidence proving that the dissolution of the CNRP and the fact we put the traitor [Kem Sokha] on trial are the right thing to do to avoid war," said Mr. Hun Sen in his speech to around 15,742 garment workers on Wednesday in Phnom Penh.
In contrast, Mr. Sam Rainsy, former CNRP's president, in an interview with the French TV5 channel on Monday, said that the dissolution of the opposition party could incite war in the country, because the opposition party played a very crucial role in echoing people's concern regarding actions carried out by the government. Without a true opposition party, there would be no talk nor negotiation between the government and unhappy citizens.
"The opposition plays a fundamental role in all democracies. It is to channelize people's dissatisfaction [...] When the opposition party is dissolved, people could not express their concern anymore. In this case, war could happen [...]," said Mr. Rainsy in the interview.
Concerning this issue, Prime Minister Hun Sen previously said that besides the CNRP, there were many other opposition parties that could also voice people's dissatisfaction in the country. So, to the premier, the dissolution of the CRNP is not the end of a liberal democracy in Cambodia.
Mr. Rainsy, on Tuesday, wrote on his Facebook page calling on the Cambodian armed forces to disobey any order in case they were ordered to shoot and kill innocent Cambodians.
"To soldiers and policemen: Please don’t obey orders from any dictators if they order you to shoot and kill innocent people," wrote Mr. Rainsy.
