Cambodia will bring a statue of the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk to place in Francophonie Square in Romania’s Bucharest.

The announcement was made after a meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn and Monica Dorina Gheorghita, secretary of state at the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, on Tuesday.

Meas Kim Heng, an undersecretary of state at the Cambodian Foreign Affairs Ministry, told reporters after the meeting that Ms Gheorghita made a request for the statue to honour the founders of the International Organisation of La Francophone (OIF).

“The reason is that they want to pay respects to the founders of OIF, so they requested us to organise a statue to place in Romania,” he said, adding that the Culture Ministry will handle the task.

He added that the statue could be finished after the July election, when Mr Sokhonn will visit Romania and deliver it.

Mr Kim Heng did not confirm details of the statue.

Thai Norak Satya, spokesman for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, applauded the decision.

“This is a big honour for King Father Norodom Sihanouk’s statue to be placed in a country for remembrance,” he said.
