Hyatt Hotel Corporation announced this week that it will be adding another luxury hotel to its Asian portfolio, and Phnom Penh’s skyline, with a 250-room luxury hotel near the Royal Palace.
According to a Wednesday press release, the Hyatt Regency Hotel will be built by local conglomerate Chip Mong Group, and is expected to be completed by 2020.
David Udell, regional president of Chicago-based Hyatt Hotels, noted that the increasing number of tourists to Cambodia made the company’s second hotel in the country a natural choice ‒ after the Park Hyatt Siem Reap opened in 2013.
“As Phnom Penh continues to become known as a destination for art, culture, tourism and business, we are confident that the globally recognized Hyatt Regency brand will resonate with business and leisure travelers visiting the country. Furthermore, we believe the hotel will play a vital role in the city’s development and will become a landmark in the city and a dynamic member of the local community,” he said in the press release.
“We are delighted to bring the Hyatt Regency brand to Phnom Penh and Cambodia, and we are honored to begin our relationship with Chip Mong Group,” he added.
The press release states that the hotel will function as a venue for weddings and conferences, and contain the obligatory swimming pool, gym and restaurants found in comparable hotels. It also boasts of offering views of the Royal Palace, and both the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.
According to The Cambodia Hotel Association, some 20 large and mid-sized hotels opened in Phnom Penh last year, with the city now boasting five 5-star hotels and about 20 4-star options.
Data from the Ministry of Tourism showed that some 2.36 million tourists visited Cambodia in the first six months of this year, a 2.6 percent increase in the same time last year. Visitors to Phnom Penh were up six percent, at 1.27 million.
