U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia William A. Heidt will give remarks at the opening of the 9th Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) and Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM) Regional Working Group on October 19 at the Sokha Hotel in Phnom Penh. Initiated by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her counterparts in 2009, the LMI supports the governments of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam to narrow the development gap and promote regional integration in ASEAN. The FLM is a consortium of like-minded countries and donor institutions dedicated to promoting cooperation on mutual development priorities.
At the 9th LMI and FLM Regional Working Group, members will focus on the implementation of the Sustainable Infrastructure Partnership, a training platform launched by Secretary of State John Kerry at the July 2016 LMI Ministerial and endorsed by the FLM. The Partnership will focus on coordinating efforts to assist Lower Mekong governments develop and manage infrastructure projects. LMI and FLM members will also discuss programmatic and policy priorities in the lead-up to the ASEAN Senior Officials’ and Ministerial meetings.
