The 2016 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, which was released this week, finds that the number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities surpassed one million for the first time during the 2015-16 academic year—an increase of seven percent from the previous year to a new high of nearly 1,044,000, representing five percent of the total student population at U.S. institutions.
The report also shows the number of Cambodians studying in the U.S. has also increased, from 492 in 2014-2015 to 499 in 2015-2016, an increase of 1.4 percent.
“This year’s survey shows that more Cambodian students than ever are pursuing their dream of studying at colleges and universities in the United States,” said Jay Raman, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. “The U.S. Embassy and EducationUSA are standing by to help Cambodians learn more about the process and to find ways to finance their education. We hope to see even more Cambodians apply to study in the United States in the coming years.”
EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 400 international student advising centers in more than 170 countries. These centers provide information about U.S.-based educational institutions and guidance to qualified individuals seeking to apply to study in the United States. The EducationUSA advising center in Cambodia is located at Pannasastra University of Cambodia (PUC).
Another resource that the U.S. Embassy offers for Cambodians interested in studying in the U.S. is the American Corner. With locations in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, and Kampong Cham, each American Corner features a diverse collection of English language books and resources, student advising materials, links to university and scholarship websites, test preparation materials, and student visa information.
