Construction of a $100 million dam project and the largest reservoir in Battambang province is 98 percent complete and scheduled to be finished before Khmer New Year in April.
The Battambang Multipurpose Dam, located in Ratanak Mondul district’s Plov Meas commune, has dikes connecting one mountain with another to create a reservoir with a storage capacity of 286 million cubic meters of water.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, water will be distributed along the Sangke river and driven through the main canal and sub-canals to irrigate an area of 47,000 hectares of wet paddy and 12,000 hectares of dry paddy in three districts: Ratanak Mondul, Banan and Mong Russey.
The dam will generate up to 130MW of hydroelectric power, improve the irrigation system, serve as flood control and provide water for consumption to Battambang City.
Posting on his Facebook page yesterday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that as of Wednesday, the project had reached 98 percent completion and was due to be finished before Khmer New Year.
“I used to be a farmer’s son and understand the needs of citizens. Hun Sen is now pushing development across the country to help people have better living conditions and be free from poverty,” he said.
Long Phalkun, director of the provincial department of water resources and meteorology, told Khmer Times that construction of the dam, which started in March 2014, was being undertaken by a Chinese company.
He said he was unsure when it would be officially operating.
