On Tuesday, Phnom Penh City Hall has revealed its plan to establish an innovative maritime public transport service in the Capital of Phnom Penh in a view to expand the public transport network and to ease the problem of traffic congestion in the city.
According to Mayor Pa Socheatavong, the new maritime public transport service will be called "Water Taxi Service" that will use speedboats to transport passengers back and forth between Prek Phnov bridge, in Tolesap River, and Takhmao City, in Bassac River. Along this new maritime line, 9 docks will be built to let passengers stop where they prefer. And the transport service will start from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
"I think this project is really a good one. It should be very important for us to ease the main problem of traffic congestion in the Capital [..] The new speedboat could carry 90 passengers onboard, and 20 speedboads will be put in service." Mayor Socheatvong wrote on his Facebook page.
Beside this project of Water Taxi Service, the city hall has already established a municipal public transport service called Phnom Penh City Bus which is in service since 2014. As of 2017, three lines run across the city.
Although the bus service is managed by the city hall, it was before financed by the Japanese International Cooperation (JICA).
