The U.S. Embassy in Cambodia, on Thursday, expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Sok An, the late Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, who passed away on March 15 in Beijing from illness at the age of 66.
According to the embassy, trough his role as President of the Apsara Authority, Mr. Sok An was a longtime partner with the embassy in the preservation of the Cambodian culture.
The embassy added that through his role as chairman of the Task Force on the Khmer Rouge Trial, Mr. Sok An made remarkable efforts in helping the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) to establish the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
In the same way, Mr. Sun Chay, lawmaker from the opposition party CNRP, told reporters on Thursday that he and other lawmakers from the CNRP planned to pay their last respects to the late deputy prime minister sometime soon. They will discuss together to choose a convenient date to go to Mr. Sok An's funeral.
"In the name of lawmaker, we really regret this loss of national resource. For such loss, we don't think about political party or about what he had done before; we still want to express our condolences," said Mr. Chay.
To replace the late deputy prime minister, Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Thursday, appointed Mr. Bin Chhin, Chairman of the National Authority for Land Dispute and Resolution, as acting minister in charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers.
On the other hand, the government plans to spend $750,000 for the overall funeral of the late deputy prime minister.
