The inauguration of the new administrative compound in Tbong Khmom province took place on Tuesday in the presence of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The compound is built on about 2,000 hectares of land. The groundbreaking began in May 2015 in the presence of the premier himself.

Tbong Khmom is a new province that was created under Prime Minister Hun Sen's leadership, by splitting Kampong Cham province in two. As a result, Tbong Khmom is the eastern part of Kampong Cham province bordering Vietnam. It was officially announced as a new province by Interior Minister Sar Kheng in June 2014.

As of today, the total of land in Tbong Khmom province is 5,250.51 square kilometers. There are six districts and one municipality, with 64 communes, 873 villages, and 844,000 inhabitants in the province. One university, twenty three high schools, and 395 primary schools were also built in Tbong Khmom.

Besides Tbong Khmom, Banteay Meanchey province was also created in the 80s under Prime Minister Hun Sen's leadership during the civil war. Banteay Meanchey was created by splitting Battambong province in two.

Experts said that the creation of Banteay Meanchey province was to have a better control of the battlefield by the government led by Prime Minister Hun Sen at the time.
