PM: Development has to go along with conservation

On Monday, Prime Minister Hun Sen has been participating in an international conference in Siem Reap City as the guest speaker. The themes of the conference were "Sustainable Tourism" and "Conserving and Developing Urban Heritages".

In his speech, the premier pointed out that tourism is one part of the economic and social sectors in many country around the world. It contributes to raise the living standard of the people, and to fight against climate change. According to him, to promote tourism, all counties in the region must closely cooperate.

He added that last year, there were five million international tourists coming to visit Cambodia. This digit shows that the rate of tourists visiting the kingdom increased to 5 percent. As a result, last year, the total income from this sector was $3 billion.

He also said that for the first three months of the year 2017, 1.5 million tourists came to visit Cambodia. So the growth in Cambodian tourism is 11.9 percent. He also said that the number of tourists coming to visit Cambodia could reach 5.4 million at the end of the year 2017, and seven million in 2020.

"In 2016, Cambodian tourism directly created about 620,000 jobs, and indirectly created many other thousand jobs for Cambodian people," said the prime minister.

Concerning the development and conservation of the heritage sites for tourists, the premier said that policy makers must not be extremist by being "far right" or "far left" - policy makers must use their right judgement to conserve or to develop certain buildings in cities.

"It's impossible to think only to the conservation without thinking to the development and vice versa," added Prime Minister Hun Sen.
