Gov't warns of using legal measure against opposition parties

The Cambodian Ministry of Interior on Tuesday has been sending letters to 11 political parties including the opposition party Sam Rainsy, in order to ask them to fulfill their duty according to the Law on Political Parties. If they don't do so, the ministry warns them of using legal measure against them.

Concerning the Sam Rainsy, the ministry asked them to change their party name. As for the FUNCINPEC party, the ministry asked them to change their party logo.

According to the ministry, the Law on Political Parties forbids political parties from using personal name and logo as the sign of their party.

In the letter, the ministry said that the opposition CNRP and the royalist FUNCINPEC have 90 days to change the name of their party or the logo of their party.

As for the other nine political parties, the ministry gave them only 15 days to correct their mistakes according to the law.

In the same day, the ministry has also been filing a complaint to the Cambodian Supreme Court asking them the authority to dissolve nine inactive political parties that have allegedly violated the Law on Political Parties by not sending their annual report to the ministry as requested by the law.

In the complaint letter, the minister told the Supreme Court that those nine political parties had been registered with the ministry, but they have not sent their annual report to the ministry as mentioning in the Article 31 of the Law on Political Parties.

"Registered political parties shall respectively send reports to the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Economy and Finance before the 31st of December of every year. The reports shall be signed by the political party’s president or treasurer [...]," read Article 31 of the Law on Political Parties.

"A registered political party may change its name or alter its main policies and political platform or may make an amendment on its by-laws in accordance with the political party’s Statutes (by-laws). In this case, the concerned political party must notify in writing to the Ministry of Interior by enclosing new documents which had already been changed/amended. Especially, with regard to a change of new president of the political party, shall be informed in writing to the Ministry of Interior by enclosing a copy of the brief personal history of that new president with a 4x6 photo attached," read Article 26 of the Law on Political Parties.
