Ly Sophanna, spokesman for the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, on Tuesday, said that Kem Sokha, a well-known opposition leader, was interrogated on Monday and charged by the court for «Espionage» following Article 443 of the Cambodian Penal Code.
"The acts of entering into secret agreement with a foreign state or with its agents in order to create hostilities or aggression against Cambodia is punishable by imprisonment from 15 (fifteen) years to 30 (thirty) years," read Article 443 of the Cambodian Penal Code.
Regarding this issue, Yim Sovann, a spokesman for the opposition party CNRP of which Mr. Sokha is president, said that his party won't do anything. They just want to let things happen by following the current political situation.
As for Chin Malin, a spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry of Justice, told reporters on Tuesday that according to the Law on Political Party, when a president of a political party has been committing an offence, he/she is becoming inmate. As a result, Mr. Sokha arrest is affecting his party's activity; and it could also lead to the dissolution of his party if Mr. Sokha is convicted.
Mr. Sokha was arrested on Sunday early morning around midnight at his house in Phnom Penh following an alleged video clip posted on the Internet for which Prime Minister Hun Sen has accused Mr. Sokha for high treason.
