67 lawmakers from the ruling party CPP, on Monday, during an extraordinary session, have been voting to give green light to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to process the case concerning Kem Sokha, a well-known opposition leader who is charged by the court for treason. The vote took place without the presence of any opposition lawmaker who prefered to boycott the session instead.
According to Fresh News, a local online newspaper, responding to the boycott, Sok Ey San, a spokesman for the CPP, said that CNRP lawmaker chose to boycott because they knew very well that by law, they would not be able to stop the court from processing the case due to the fact that they must have two-third of the total voices in the assembly to stop the court.
In contrast, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported that CNRP lawmakers decided to boycott because they considered the session was illegal, and Mr. Sokha is still their party's president.
