The Labor Advisory Council (LAC) in Cambodia, on Thursday, voted to select $165 as minimum wages for all Cambodian workers in the country for the year 2018.
In addition, Prime Minister Hun Sen decided to add $5 more to the selected minimum wage. As the result, the new minimum wage for the year 2018 will be $170. Comparing to last year, the minimum wage is increasing from $153 to $170.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Ith Samheng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, said that with this new minimum wage, workers in the garment industry will get from $187 to $198 as monthly salary that will make their life easier.
On the other hand, according to The Arbitration Council (AC), whose main role is to resolve labor dispute through conciliation and arbitration under the Cambodia's Labor Law, wrote that following Article 104 of the Labor Law, "the minimum wage is designed to ensure every worker of a decent standard of living compatible with human dignity."
The AC added that following Article 108 of the Labor Law, anywhere in the country, any salary paid to any Cambodian worker less than the minimum wage is considered illegal.
"For task-work or piecework, whether it is done in the workshop or at home, the wage must be calculated in a manner that permits the worker of mediocre ability working normally to earn, for the same amount of time worked, a wage at least equal to the guaranteed minimum wage as determined for a worker," read Article 108 of the Labor Law.
