His Majesty the King Norodom Sihamoni, on Wednesday, granted a royal pardon to former senator Hong Sok Hour following Mr. Sok Hour's letter of apology to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
In his letter sent to the premier in September, Mr. Sok Hour said that as a Cambodian citizen, I have only one wish in accordance with Samdech's policy in making efforts to successfully obtain national unity as well as national reconciliation in order to defend Cambodian territory and to preserve good relationship with neighboring country. Such policy leads to a better development and prosperity in the country.
Mr. Sok Hour also expressed his regret for his wrongdoing toward Prime Minister Hun Sen's policy of border demarcation, by using inappropriate documents regarding border issue. His wrongdoing could make people misunderstand the royal government's policy.
"Therefore, may Samdech understands this with grace in order to ask His Majesty the King to grant me His royal pardon for me to return to reunite with my family and to go for a medical treatment in France," wrote Mr. Sok Hour.
Mr.Sok Hour was arrested in mid 2015, following his post of a border treaty with Vietnam on Sam Rainsy's Facebook page.
As the result, the Cambodian court charged him for three offences - forgery of public documents, use of forged public document, and incitement to social insecurity.
On November 7, 2017, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court issued a verdict sentencing Mr. Sok Hour to seven years behind bars. However, Mr. Sok Hour has been appealing to higher courts pledging his innocence. But he failed to do so. And until today, Mr. Sok Hour has already spent two years of his jail time.
