Ms. Kosal Malin, spokesperson for the Cambodia’s National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces (NPMEC), told reporters on Saturday that a Cambodian peacekeeper was injured in an attack by a group of Malian rebels in Mali on Friday. The attack also killed two peacekeepers and injured 15 other peacekeepers from other countries.
Ms. Malin added that the injured Cambodian peacekeeper, known as Lieutenant Mom Rithy, was transported to a hospital nearby.
According to Ms. Malin, there are 309 Cambodian peacekeepers participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali.
Following this incident, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the "outrageous" incidents against the UN peacekeepers, by warning that any attack against peacekeepers may considered as war crime.
"The Secretary-General conveys his deepest condolences to the Governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger and his profound sympathies to the families of the victims. He wishes a swift recovery to the injured," his spokesperson said.
According to the UN, more than 146 members of the UN mission in Mali have lost their lives since 2013.
Since 2012, the situation in Mali has became dangerous after Malian rebel armed groups captured the entire northern part of the country and were only pushed back a year later following a military intervention by France.
