CMAC: Cambodia is the most free country in Greater Mekong Subregion

Tin Sokhavuth

Heng Ratana, Director General of the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday stating that the Kingdom of Cambodia was the most free country among the six countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) - Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

According to Mr. Ratana, there are already three countries in the GMS that are one-party dominant states where communist party rules the country - China, Laos, and Vietnam. Whereas in Thailand, the armed forces are running the country; and religious war continues to take place in southern Thailand. As for Myanmar, war between Burmese government and the Rohingya is making Myanmar unpopular to the world.

"In sum, no country in the GMS has yet a better liberal democracy system than Cambodia," wrote Mr. Ratana.

Concerning democracy, Mr. Ratana agreed with Prime Minister Hun Sen to say that democracy, human rights, and development could exist only when peace reigns in the country.

Mr. Ratana also expressed his support for President Donald Trump who previously said that the US Government always wanted to help other countries grow strong and independent for the better future.

"We want you to grow strong and independent, to deepen your historical value and to strive for the better future of your people," said Mr. Trump.

And, to preserve peace in the world, the US Government led by President Donald Trump would not hesitate to use its mighty armed forces to control the world.

"Peace through strength will be at the center of that foreign policy. This principle will make possible a stable, more peaceful world with less conflict and more common ground [...] The world will be more peaceful and more prosperous with a stronger and more respected America," wrote the White House on its website.

The GMS is the region in the basin of the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. There are more than 300 million people living in the region. It was the Asian Development Bank (ADB) who designated the region as Greater Mekong Subregion for development purpose.

Expert said that the GMS is considered as one of the best places for biodiversity in the world. The region is also a very important food provider, and the site for many large-scale construction of hydropower dams.

For more than two decades, the six countries of the GMS have been working together under an economic cooperation program to develop the region in order to realize their vision of a prosperous, integrated, and harmonious subregion.

The GMS development program was designed to strengthen connectivity through physical infrastructure and the development of economic corridors, to improve competitiveness through market integration and the facilitation of cross-border trade and travel, and to build a sense of community by addressing shared social and environmental concerns.
