In response to the statement made by US Senator Ted Cruz about the illegitimacy of the upcoming general election in July 2018, Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Friday, said that he did not care whether the election would be recognized by the international community or not. What would be count for him was the recognition by Cambodian people.
In a meeting with a group of students from ASEAN countries at the Peace Palace on Friday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that his government would prepare the general election for July next year as planned.
"With help or without help, it doesn't matter. With recognition or without recognition, it's not important, because the election is organized in accordance with the Constitution that recognizes Cambodian people acknowledgement as valid. So, with Cambodian people's recognition is enough [...]," said the premier.
Relating to this issue, an anonymous political analyst said that the recognition from international community is not important as stated by the premier. However, as a prime minister for a very longtime and with a lot of experiences, surrounded by many advisors, Samdech Hun Sen should know very well about what should happen if the election would not be recognized by international community. Particularly, what should happen if the US and the EU close their market for Cambodian exported products.
In the same way, Mr. Sok Eysan, spokesman for the ruling party CPP, told reporters on Thursday that the ultimatum made by Senator Ted Cruz for the Cambodian government to release Mr. Kem Sokha, a well-known opposition leader, before November 9, was not in accordance with President Donald Trump's foreign policy.
To this claim, the anonymous political analyst said that Mr. Eysan could be wrong, because President Trump's foreign policy was to make America the number one in the world by using force to control the world.
"Peace through strength will be at the center of that foreign policy. This principle will make possible a stable, more peaceful world with less conflict and more common ground [...] The world will be more peaceful and more prosperous with a stronger and more respected America," wrote the White House on its website.
