The European Union in Cambodia, on Monday, signed an agreement with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an international NGO, to provide 2.8 million EUR as grant to the NGO for them to continue their work in promoting the sustainable development in Mondulkiri province by protecting natural resource and enhancing the livelihood of the local people.
"The European Union and WWF have just signed a project supporting forest management in Mondulkiri province, worth 2.8 million EUR. Its objective is to empower forest-dependent communities in policy decisions and conservation of their resources," wrote the EU on its Facebook page.
In his speech during the signing ceremony, Mr. George Edgar, Ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia, said that to make the project successful, the government of Cambodia needed to effectively enforce the existing laws regarding illegal logging and poaching.
"To make the project succeed, we encourage more effective law enforcement against illegal logging and poaching which threaten the integration of these unique landscapes and undermine local livelihoods," said the ambassador.
