Koh Pen Bridge to be inaugurated in April

The ongoing construction of the Koh Pen Bridge in Kampong Cham City is 91 percent done. The bridge would be inaugurated in April before the Cambodian New Year, in the presence of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

According to General Kung Rong, Commander of the 181st Squadron of the Cambodian Army Corps of Engineers, in charge of the construction of the bridge, Koh Pen Bridge is 779 meters long and 9.2 meters large. The bridge connects Kampong Cham City to Koh Pen Island in Mekong River. Once built, the bridge could serve around 10,000 households living on the island to cross Mekong River with free of charge.

Gen. Rong added that although the construction of the bridge was not finished yet, Cambodian people living on Koh Pen Island were allowed to cross the bridge since six months ago. This fact could help them to save around 500 million riel by crossing Mekong River by boat.

However, according to a local online newspaper, the road connecting the island to the bridge is too small. Its size is only for one car. For this reason, people living on the island have insisted that the provincial authority should do somehow to make the road bigger by asking households living alongside the road to move back a little bit from both sides of the road.
