On Friday, the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training in Cambodia issued a press release stating that a new memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed by the ministry and the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (PAPA) on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur in view to protect Cambodian workers in Malaysia.
Following the MoA, the background and asset of each Malaysian employer need to be checked before they are allowed to hire Cambodian worker. A consistent database would be also established and shared by both countries to register Cambodian workers as well as Malaysian employers from the time of signing the contract until the end of the contract.
Cambodian workers would be visited each trimester by the agencies concerned from both countries to make sure that worker's well-being and rights are assured. A cell phone would provided to each maid for them to call their family in case a problem happens.
Insurance covering accident in workplace and health insurance would also be provided to Cambodian workers. Furthermore, in case a dispute happens, a lawyer and a temporary place to stay would be automatically provided to worker by the agencies concerned.
Workers would be trained before and when they arrive in Malaysia. And all agencies recruiting workers need to be informed about laws and regulations relating to workers and employers in both countries.
According to the Malaymail Online, around 300 Cambodian workers would go to work in Malaysia in March following this signing of the MoA.
For the first six months of this year, the Cambodian embassy in Malaysia has helped to repatriate 134 Cambodian workers from Malaysia.
