Tin Sokhavuth

General Ith Sarath, on Tuesday, after the annual meeting at the Ministry of Defense, told reporters that his ministry was thinking about the possibility to reopen the joint military exercises with the countries, friends of Cambodia, after one year of suspension due to the elections, and an anti-drug campaign.

Gen. Sarath added that at the beginning of this year 2018, his ministry was reviewing a number of proposals made by foreign countries, friends of Cambodia, asking for a possible reopening of the joint military exercises using real weapon and bullet, or the emergency exercises in critical circumstances such as natural disaster for example. Nevertheless, Gen. Sarath did not reveal any name of any country that had made the proposal.

In january last year, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Chhum Socheath informed the US Embassy in Phnom Penh that the annual joint military exercise "Angkor Sentinel" was canceled due to the commune election in June and an anti-drug campaign that would take six months.

However, following the cancellation, Mr. Jay Raman, spokesman for the US Embassy, told VOA that although the military exercise was canceled, military exchanges and training between the two countries were not affected.
