Starting this year, the purchase of tickets to the Unesco-listed Angkor temple complex will be available online.
The announcement was made during a meeting yesterday between Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth and Minister of Tourism Thong Khon.
The official statement from the Ministry of Economy and Finance said the option to pay via the internet will be introduced during the second quarter of the year, but failed to provide a more specific date.
Electronic payments of tickets to the world-renowned archeological site will be possible via credit card from Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, JCB and Diners Club International, according to the ministry statement.
“The aim is to increase the options available to tourists and to facilitate the process of purchasing tickets,” said Song Tonghab, deputy director of Angkor Enterprise, the government-run institution that manages ticket sales for the temple complex.
“Now tourists won’t have to queue in front of the ticket booths.”
Revenue from the sale of tickets at the Angkor complex increased 75 percent last year, reaching $108 million. 2.45 million tourists purchased tickets that year, an 11.8 percent year-on-year hike.
