Cambodia’s accounting and finance industries have seen the healthiest growth over the past three months, followed by jobs in sales, hospitality, management and marketing, according to the latest report by jobs website Everjob.

More than 2,500 positions in the accounting and finance sectors were listed on the site in the last three months, the report states. It added that the starting salary in the sector ranging from about $200 to $500, similar to the next most popular job category: sales.

The report attributes the number of positions in finance and accounting to the continued growth of microfinance institutions across the country.

Cambodia’s strong tourism industry, which accounts for almost 12 percent of total employment or some 285,000 people, is predicted to grow by another four percent by 2025.

However, the report notes that starting salaries are low. Those without prior experience start off at $200 a month.

“Among the large range of job categories present on our website, the wages offered by employers rely on multiple factors, education being one of the most influential,” explained Alexandra Iuchyk, Everjob’s business development manager.

“With the decrease of the poverty level and the growing preference for long studies, we can expect the average wage to steadily increase by the next decade.”

A recent survey by the International Labor Organization (ILO) suggested that Cambodia has one of the world’s lowest levels of unemployment, at 0.55 percent of working-age population.

However, the report pointed out that the percentage of Cambodians working in vulnerable and low-wage jobs is among the highest in the world, and highlighted the vulnerability of employment in the Kingdom.

“When there is a lack of decent jobs, workers often turn to informal employment,” the ILO report said, adding that this “is typically characterized by low productivity and low pay.”
