Six mobile phone towers disguised as trees have been installed in the Angkor Archaeological Park to give mobile operators improved coverage and internet speed as well as to help maintain the park’s natural beauty.
The Apsara Authority – the government body that manages the park – installed the towers in six locations including in Teksan Tbong and Nokor Krao villages in Kork Chork commune, Kravan and Rohal villages in Nokor Thom commune, Takav Gate and on Komai Street.
Sok Sangvar, the deputy director general of the Apsara Authority, said Smart was the first mobile operator to launch a 4G mobile internet service in the Angkor area, doing so last Thursday, and that other mobile operators would soon follow suit.
“The installation of mobile phone towers in the Angkor area will make it easy for local and international tourists to make phone calls, post pictures on Facebook and live stream videos immediately,” he said.
According to the Apsara Authority, it is the first time Cambodia has installed towers that look like trees, an effort to help maintain the beauty of the natural surroundings in accordance with World Heritage Site standards.
Local resident Sim Sophea said the new towers would make it easier for both people living in the area and tourists alike as some areas in the historic temple complex lacked mobile coverage. “It will make it easier for people in the area,” she said.
