Cambodian and Lao armed forces confront each other at the Cambodia-Laos border at "O Talao" checkpoint in Steung Treng province since February 8, 2017.

According to Fresh News, a trusted local online newspaper, the tension was raised when the Cambodian Army Corps of Engineers began the construction of a border beltway at the checkpoint, and Lao armed force came to interrupt arguing the checkpoint was in Lao territory.

Fresh News reported that the provincial authority said it was Lao soldiers, from the province of Attapu, equipped with all kind of weapon, who came to interrupt the construction of the border beltway in Thmor Keo commune, Siem Pang district, Steung Treng province.

The authority added that in response to the reinforcement of Lao armed force, Cambodian counterpart tried to talk with Lao soldiers to not to use weapons in Cambodian soil, but Lao soldiers did not agree saying that they were only following the order from Lao high command.

For their safety, the Cambodian armed force was reinforced to be able to continue the construction of the beltway that was at the time 150 kilometers long.

As for General Ek Siphandon, Commander of the Cambodia-Laos Border Guard, this issue needs to be addressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cambodian Border Committee.
