The reconstruction of a 105-year-old market in Prek Kres commune, Kampong Trach District, Kampot Province, was finished on March 11. The reconstruction was funded by local authority and Cambodian people living abroad in response to the demand of the merchants selling goods in the market.

The reopening ceremony of this 105-year-old market, called "Ton Hon Market" (sudden market), took place on Sunday. And after the inauguration, merchants of the market could retake their stall to sell anything they like without worrying about paying any monthly fee for the reconstruction, because it was mainly funded by generous people.

Mr. Sek Chhin, commune chief in Prek Kres commune, said that the market was bigger than before, with its 19 meters long and 14 meters wide. The funding was from Cambodian people living in France, Canada, USA, and local authority. The total funding was around $40,000.

Mrs. Eung Pichhay, representative of the Cambodian people living abroad and former porc meat seller in the market in the 60s, said that to respond to the demand of the merchants and by seeing with her own eyes the degradation of the market, she had decided to raise money from her relatives and Cambodian people living abroad in order to help funding the reconstruction of the market that began in January.

According to Mr. Min Savuth, 70-year-old, a member of Prek Kres commune council, the market was built in 1912 during the French colonialism. However, the market has survived the US bombing and the civil wars until the reconstruction.
