The launch of the undersea optical cable (MCT) connecting Cambodia to Malaysia will take place on March 15, in the presence of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
According to Mr. Prakash Velayudhan, the chief technology officer at Telcotech owned by EZECOM, the installation of this MCT of 1,300 kilometers long cost about $70 million. The MCT connects Cambodia at Sihanoukville Province to Malaysia at the state of Kuantan via Thailand at Rayong Province.
Mr. Velayudhan, added that the MCT would also connect to the 20,000-kilometre-long Asia-America Gateway, which links the west coast of the United States with Southeast Asia.
He also said that the MCT would provide an Internet service with the speed up to 100 gigabits per second, with an overall capacity of at least 30 terabits per second.
In the same way, Mr. Im Vutha, spokesperson for the Telecom Regulator of Cambodia, told reporters that the MCT cost less that satellite, and it would provide faster Internet service than which provided by the existing Internet networks.
On the other hand, Mr. Yves Schaeffer, CEO of EZECOM, said that his company would be the first Internet service provider (ISP) in Cambodia to own this MCT that would improve Cambodia's independence in term of telecommunications and Internet connectivity.
