Ministry of Defense: CNRP's promise to modernize Cambodian armed forces is a lie

Tin Sokhavuth

Chhum Socheath, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, on Thursday, said that the promise to modernize the Cambodian armed forces made by Yim Sovann, a spokesman for the opposition party CNRP, is a lie. According to Mr. Socheath, this claim was made only to gain a few ballots, because none of the CNRP's officials have military knowledge or experience.

Mr. Socheath's statement was made in response to Mr. Sovann's claim made on Monday, during the commune election campaign, that if the CNRP got a chance to win the elections and lead the country, his party would save more national budget to modernize the Cambodian armed forces.

"The CNRP doesn't have its own armed forces, Cambodian armed forces are national armed forces which serve the nation. We would like our military be strong. We would save money to buy modern weapons for our soldiers for them to defend our nation," said Mr. Sovann.

In contrast, Mr. Socheath said that the Cambodian armed forces are already equipped with all kind of modern weapons, they also have enough training. Moreover, Cambodian soldiers have fought to defense Cambodian sovereignty and territory, and to defense the elected government and Cambodian people in order for them to live in peace and prosperity since many mandates.

"Under Prime Minister Hun Sen leadership, the Ministry of Defense has been sending Cambodian UN peacekeepers abroad. Those peacekeepers have been internationally qualified as good soldiers at the international level. It is an unforgotten pride, it is also a reality not a lie," added Mr. Socheath.
