Kem Sokha is accused for high treason

Tin Sokhavuth

Kem Sokha, president of the opposition party CNRP, was arrested early morning on Sunday around midnight at his house in Phnom Penh. He is accused by Prime Minister Hun Sen for high treason following Mr. Sokha's speech in a video clip posted on the Internet.

On the other hand, Mr. Sokha is accused for committing a crime in the kind of «flagrante delicto» or actual crime for which he was arrested without arrest warrant from the court and even he is a lawmaker with parliamentary immunity.

In response, lawmakers from the opposition party CNRP said that the arrest is politically motivated and unconstitutional. They also said that Mr. Sokha did not commit any actual crime at all.

As for the ruling party, they said that what Mr. Sokha said in the video clip is an act of conspiracy in an attempt to topple the government.

However, in the video clip, the person supposed to be Mr. Sokha was in Australia talking to Cambodian people living abroad. And it was supposed to be in 2013. As a result, it was not an «actual event» and it was not on «Cambodian soil.»

Concerning this issue, an anonymous political analyst said that Mr. Sokha does not need to be arrested, because he won't go anywhere as he already did. If people think Mr. Sokha did something wrong, they just do a lawsuit against him, and let the court do their job.
