The launch of Lower Sesan II hydropower dam

The inauguration of the Lower Sesan II hydropower dam took place on Monday, in Sesan district, Steung Treng province, with the presence of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The dam is the today biggest dam in the country, capable of generating 400 megawatts of electricity. The construction of the dam cost $781.52 million.

Three companies are investing in the construction of the dam - Hydrolancang International Energy from China has 51% share, Royal Group from Cambodia has 39% share, and EVN has 10% share. The total investment is $781.52 million. Electricity from the dam will be sold for $6.95/KWH. After 40 years, the ownership will be transferred to the government.

According to Prime Minister Hun Sen's Facebook page, to connect electricity from the dam to the national power grid, his government plans to build power lines connecting Steung Treng province, Kratie province, Kampong Cham province, and Phnom Penh Capital together.

Prime Minister Hun Sen also said that so far, more than three million Cambodian households are already connected to the national power grid. Moreover, his government is making efforts to make sure that in 2020, all Cambodian villages would be connected to the national power grid.

According to Mr. Suy Sem, Minister of Mines and Energy, until today, six hydropower dams have been built to generate electricity for daily use in the country. Those dams are Kirirom I hydropower dam (12MW) in Kampong Speu, Kamchay (193MW) in Kampot, Kirirom III (18MW) in the southwestern part of the country, Stung Atai (120MW) in Pursat, Lower Russei Chrum (338MW) in Koh Kong, Stung Tatai (246MW) in Koh Kong.
