Mr. Suy Sem, Minister of Mines and Energy, told reporters on Thursday that 19 oil blocks were discovered in Kampong Thom Province. In total, the Kingdom of Cambodia has 25 oil blocks with a capacity to provide about five million tons of oil a year. The production of Cambodian oil would begin in 2019 by the Singaporean oil and gas company KrisEnergy.
Minister Suy Sem added that there were six offshore oil blocks in Cambodian water - block A, B, C, D, E, and F. The exploitation of the offshore oil in block A and B would start in 2019 by the company KrisEnergy. An estimate of 31 million barrels could be extracted from block A and B. Whereas block C was being studied by a Malaysian oil company.
Concerning onshore oil block in Kampong Thom Province, only one block is being studed by the Vietnamese oil company PetroVietnam.
To facilitate the transportation of oil in the country, Mr. Suy Sem said that his government planned to build an oil pipeline system connecting Sihanoukville to the Capital Phnom Penh, and to a great number of Cambodian provinces.
"A draft law on oil exploitation is on the way, and will be sent to the Council of Ministers for approval at the beginning of January 2018," said Mr. Suy Sem.
