In a meeting with government officials at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) on Wednesday, Minister Sun Chanthol highlighted the potential of the water transportation in the country. To the minister, water transportation could help to assure a sustainable development in the country, as well as to cut down traffic congestion and traffic accident in the Capital Phnom Penh.

Concerning this issue, Minister Chanthol urged the water transport department of the MPWT to speed up the construction of a river bus network between Phnom Penh and Kandal Province in order for the construction to be finished before the upcoming Khmer New Year in April next year.

The minister also would like to see all docks in the network link to the existing bus stops in Phnom Penh and Kandal Province in a view to help passenger fing river bus more easily.

Regarding this issue, an anonymous political analyst said that water transportation is the cheapest and oldest mode of transport in the world - we could start to use our existing natural rivers, creeks and lakes to transport goods and/or passengers from place to place around the country without the requirement of huge investment in the construction and maintenance of a water transportation network in the kingdom.

The political analyst added that the cost of operation of water transportation is very low comparing to road transportation. On the other hand, water transportation has the largest carrying capacity, and is most suitable for carrying large and heavy goods for long distances.
