Request for Mr. Kem Sokha to resign from presidential function

Tin Sokhavuth

Mr. Soung Sophorn, former CNRP youth leader and former CNRP lawmaker candidate in Pailin Province, told reporters on Sunday that the resignation letter that was sent to media outlets was his letter, and he wanted to do a press conference on Monday to make a request for Mr. Kem Sokha, president of the CNRP, to resign from presidential function due to the fact that Mr. Kem Sokha was working for Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Mr. Sophorn argued that since its inception, the former Human Rights Party (HRP), led by Mr. Kem Sokha, was supported by the current government. For instance, because of the government, the HRP could organize its first congress at Olympic Stadium where the security was ensured by armed forces from the government.

He added that recently, after a negotiation between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Mr. Kem Sokha, a CNRP's commune chief was released from prison. Later on, the prime minister said that Mr. Kem Sokha did not keep his promise after three days. "I think that's all we could know, the whole story behind the scene is more than that. And what I said was true, not only me, most of people and politicians said it was true after listening to the leaked conversation," added Mr. Sophorn.

He also said that although he knew very well that his resignation was not a big deal, he got to do that for the sake of patriotic citizens. And he did not want anybody take patriotic citizens as a springboard.

"My resignation is an insistence for Mr. Kem Sokha to resign from his function ... for Mrs. Mou Sokhour or Kong Korm to be President of the CNRP," said Mr. Sophorn.

Mr. Sophorn's resignation happened in the same day after Prime Minister Hun Sen confirmed that the voice in a top secret leaked audio conversation was his voice, and what he said in the conversation was 100 percent true.

In addition, Prime Minister Hun Sen added that what Mr. Kem Sokha did in the past was to follow his recommendations such as posting messages on Facebook, issuing the declaration, registration of Mr. Kem Sokha's name on voter list etc.

"H.E Kem Sokha always informs me before doing something, such as issuing declarations, and a number of other things," said Prime Minister Hun Sen.

In the leaked conversation, Prime Minister Hun Sen and another person for whom Prime Minister Hun Sen said it was Mr. Kem Sokha, were talking about posting political messages on Facebook to slam Mr. Sam Rainsy, former president of the CNRP. The prime minister also recommended Mr. Kem Sokha to go to register his name on voter list, after a royal pardon to discharge Mr. Kem Sokha was signed by the King.

In the conversation, Prime Minister Hun Sen mentioned about the unacceptable slandering regarding General Hun Manet, prime minister's eldest son, and Mrs. Bun Rany, prime minister's own wife. The possibility for Mr. Kem Sokha to be the president of the CNRP was also mentioned in the conversation.

In the same day, a number of CNRP's members in Anlong Veng District, Oddor Meanchey Province, resigned from the party. They also burned four CNRP signs by saying that their leaders were corrupt, irresponsible, and nepotist.
