Mr. George Edgar, Ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia, on Tuesday, told representatives from the National Union Alliance Chamber of Cambodia (NACC) that the EU still would like to support the garment and footwear sectors that are very necessary to support many Cambodian people.
According to Mr. Som Onn, NACC's president, the meeting between the EU and NACC on Tuesday was mainly to discuss the issues regarding Cambodian garment and footwear sectors.
In the meeting, Mr. Onn told Ambassador Edgar that at the present time, the Cambodian garment and footwear sectors were on the rise. The sectors provided jobs to around 800,000 Cambodian workers who, in turn, could support their families of around two million people.
He added that the total amount of money from the export of clothes and shoes made in Cambodia in 2016 was more than $7 billion. And, for the first nine months in 2017, the export was estimated to be more than $5.6 billion.
Regarding working condition, Mr. Onn told the ambassador that with cooperation from different stakeholders, particularly ILO, working condition in the country was improved day by day.
However, in the same day, the EU announced its decision to suspend all supports for Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC) stating that elections in Cambodia would not be credible after the dissolution of the main opposition party CNRP.
In a letter to Mr. Sik Bun Hok, president of the NEC, Ambassador Edgar said that it was the dissolution of the CNRP that was the reason for the EU to suspend all supports for the NEC.
"The dissolution of the CNRP also means that it will not be able to run in the National Assembly elections in 2018. An electoral process from which the main opposition party has been arbitrarily excluded cannot be seen as legitimate," the letter reads. "Under these circumstances, the European Union does not believe there is a possibility of a credible electoral process."
